Jacob Smeltzer, MD, is a Mayo fellowship-trained medical oncologist and hematologist with the AdventHealth Cancer Institute Shawnee Mission. Dr. Smeltzer provides comprehensive, whole-person care for patients with all types of cancer and hematologic disorders, from risk assessment to diagnosis to treatment. Consistently named to Kansas City magazine's Top Doctors list, he is well respected by both patients and peers for providing highly competent and uniquely compassionate cancer care.
Dr. Smeltzer's clinical interests include genitourinary cancers, including prostate, renal cell and bladder; hematologic malignancies, including lymphoma and myeloma; and general oncology. His research focuses primarily on genitourinary cancers.
After earning his medical degree from Creighton University School of Medicine, he completed his internal medicine residency at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He then went on to complete an oncology fellowship at the esteemed Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, during which time he was appointed to the prestigious role of Chief Fellow.
Prior to joining AdventHealth in 2024, Dr. Smeltzer served as staff physician and chair of the department of medical oncology at Saint Luke's Health System. He is Board-certified in medical oncology and hematology and he welcomes new patients ages 18 and older.
