Dr. Chawla joined ROA in 2011. Prior to this, he served as a Radiation Oncologist at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland for the past seven years. There, he helped lead the cancer center's Stereotactic Radiosurgery Program with Brainlab technology, and served as Cancer Liaison for the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer. He was Principal Investigator for numerous trials, including Partial Breast Irradiation (PBI) studies and Prostate, Central Nervous System and Head/Neck cancer investigations through the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG). He was also involved in multidisciplinary cancer research collaborations with The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Dr. Chawla received his undergraduate degree from Pennsylvania State University, graduating with honors in Biology. He received his M.D. from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia in 1998, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed his Radiation Oncology training at Harvard's Massachusetts General Hospital in 2003, where he won awards for scholarly research as a Radiation Oncology resident. He has published several peer-reviewed articles related to prostate, breast and gastrointestinal cancer management, and has given national presentations regarding colorectal cancer, the use of PET/CT imaging in radiation therapy planning, and the use of Stereotactic Radiosurgery for facial pain disorders.
His clinical interests include the use of Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) for tumors of the brain, spine, and lung. He has special expertise in SRS/SBRT for benign intracranial tumors and disorders, including acoustic neuromas, meningiomas, and Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN). His other areas of clinical interest and expertise include breast, lung, esophageal, prostate, and gastrointestinal tumors.
