Brief Intro

Matthew Stotts, MD, began his journey into medicine with a desire to understand and treat complex liver conditions. He felt guided by a commitment to ethical practice, ensuring that every decision he makes respects patient autonomy and dignity, and evidence-based medicine, integrating the latest research to provide the most effective and advanced care possible. He focuses on treating the whole person by always considering their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Dr. Stotts’ clinical interests include the full spectrum of liver disorders, such as cirrhosis, alcohol-related liver disease, non-alcohol related fatty liver disease, alpha-1-antitrypsan deficiency, Wilson’s disease, hemochromatosis, viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, primary biliary cholangitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis and hepatic encephalopathy. Dr. Stotts received his medical degree from Saint Louis University. He went on to complete his internal medicine residency at the University of Colorado and then returned to Saint Louis University to complete his gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship. He practiced at Banner Health in Northern Colorado briefly before pursuing an advanced hepatology and transplant fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. Soon after, he joined the faculty at the University of Virginia, where he was part of a very busy liver transplant program. Dr. Stotts returned to Denver in 2023 and, prior to joining AdventHealth, he was a member of the Presbyterian St. Luke’s liver transplant team. During his medical training, Dr. Stotts also earned two graduate degrees, a Master of Science in Nutrition from Columbia University and a Master of Public Health from the Colorado School of Public Health. Dr. Stotts has published on various topics, including alcohol-related liver disease, the use of telehealth to improve care for individuals with cirrhosis, malnutrition and bleeding and clotting disorders in patients with liver disease. He currently serves as a practice guideline committee member for the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) and as associate editor for the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) Education Universe. He is also an active member of the Association for the Study of Liver Disease, the American Gastroenterological Association and the American College of Gastroenterology.
