I was born in San Diego but raised in Los Angeles. I graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in biophysics in 1976. At the time of graduation, I achieved election to Phi Beta Kappa. In 1986, I became a diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. I have been a non-salaried UC San Diego neurosciences faculty member since completion of my residency and currently am an associate clinical professor. I'm actively engaged in teaching neurology and coordinate the Kaiser Permanente neurology resident teaching program in San Diego.
