Dr. Kadoma was born in Japan where she spent her early childhood. She is fluent in Japanese. She then moved to Toronto, Canada with her family where she grew up. Dr. Waka Kadoma received her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Toronto (U of T) in 1992 in Immunology. She also studied at U of T Graduate School in Immunology. She then earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio in 1998. She attended the Periodontology department at the University of North Carolina, School of Dentistry from 1998-2001 where she received her specialty training in Periodontics and Implant surgery. In addition, while attending UNC, Dr. Kadoma conducted her Master's thesis research (with world renowned Dr. Offenbacher) on the association between gum disease and heart attack. She has a number of publications and has conducted seminars on this topic.
Dr. Kadoma is among the few percentage of periodontists in the world to be awarded a Diplomate status with the American Board of Periodontology. A Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology is a periodontist who has made significant achievements beyond the mandatory educational requirement of the specialty. Your periodontist has been examined by a panel of internationally respected peers and awarded Diplomate status. Your periodontist has received one of the highest recognitions of achievement afforded by the specialty. Dr. Kadoma achieved this accomplishment within one year of her graduation!
In addition to becoming a Board Certified Periodontist, Dr. Kadoma strives to keep abreast of the advances in dentistry and periodontic treatment. She has attended the Pankey Institute of Higher Dental Education to take courses in Interdisciplinary Comprehensive Patient Care and Interdisciplinary Implant Treatment Sequencing and Planning in order to promote comprehensive patient care and ensure excellent communication with your dentist so that your treatment will be delivered in a well-coordinated manner for an excellent result. Dr. Kadoma is dedicated to improving not only the oral health but also the overall health of her patients.
Dr. Kadoma also has been appointed to the adjunct faculty position at the Dental School at UNC-Chapel Hill, where she teaches periodontal residents, dental students and hygiene students.
Dr. Kadoma is an active member of The American Academy of Periodontology, The Southern Academy of Periodontology, The North Carolina Society of Periodontology, the American Dental Association and the North Carolina Dental Association.
Dr. Kadoma is an accomplished equestrian and competed in equestrian show jumping in her younger years. Now she enjoys endurance running and she spends her time training for and running many road and trail races. Perhaps if you are a runner, you may see her at your next race!
