Dr. Toby Bond’s interest in medicine was inspired by his mother’s career and a demoralizing sports injury. sMy mom was a nurse in the military and I think it was probably looking through some of her textbooks on anatomy that first got me interested in medicine,t he said. sBut what really did it was when I blew out my knee in high school playing basketball. I had an ACL reconstruction. That was what really got me into it.t
He was a junior in high school in Phoenix, Arizona when he injured his knee. His team was number three in the state and making a run at the state championship. A team that they had defeated handily during the season won the championship.
Dr. Bond’s father and mother were both in the military, so as a youth he lived in many places. He was born in Detroit, Michigan. He went on to live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Philippines, the Tucson area of Arizona, Kentucky, Chicago, Denver, and Las Vegas. He graduated from high school in Phoenix, where his mother, brothers, and sisters still reside.
Dr. Bond received his bachelor’s degree from Washington State University in 1999 and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Washington School of Medicine in 2004. He completed his residency in pediatrics at Phoenix Children’s Hospital from 2004 to 2007.
Because of his sports background he originally intended to be an orthopedist, but one of his jobs as an undergraduate was working at the University’s daycare center. sI got the opportunity to work pretty closely with kids, ages zero through about 8 or 9 years old. That was a rewarding experience. I thought, ?I can be a doctor and still work with kids.’ That’s what led me into pediatrics.t
While childcare was his most regular employment as an undergraduate, it was not his only job. He frequently worked in labs. sOne lab I worked in was a snake lab. They wanted me to collect stool specimens from snakes and look at them for parasites and other things. Then the doc told me he was using some of the most poisonous snakes in the world. I didn’t last there very long.t
The most jobs he ever held at one time were three. sI worked at the daycare center " that was kind of my everyday job - and then I worked at another place called the ?Social and Economic Research Center’ where we did scientific surveys over the telephone. I worked there at night. And I worked in that lab doing dishes about four or five hours a week, just for pocket change in the summertime.t
After he finished his residency Dr. Bond began his practice at the Moses Lake Clinic. sI’ve had a great time living here. I don’t have to deal with the big city headaches that I dealt with in Phoenix. I have a five-mile commute to work and its five to ten minutes from my house to the hospital. I’m an outdoors kind of guy. I like the lake, I love jet skiing, and occasionally I’ll hop on my mountain bike and ride. I still weight lift and play basketball when I can, and I want to learn to play golf. I also love to barbecue outdoors, and since I just purchased my house, I’m learning how to garden. It’s both an interest and a necessity because I have an acre and a half, and I need to figure out what I’m going to do with it.t
Dr. Bond is a great fan of the Washington State Cougars. sI try to make it to all the home football games if I can.t He also enjoys working on cars, especially newer American cars, V8’s. His current car is a Pontiac GTO. sI just work on it now and again when I get time.t
He finds that working at Moses Lake Clinic has a variety of advantages. sOne of the pros of working here is that you are working for a large group that is set up to serve the needs of the doctors, meaning that administrative things tend to be very streamlined -- billing, dictation, and so forth -- because you have the ancillary staff to assist you with these things, whereas in a smaller group practice these things tend to be more of a headache.
I think the other thing is the financial stability of working with such a large group. We have multiple departments that
