She earned her bachelors degree at the University of California at Berkeley and earned her MD at the University of California at San Francisco. She completed a medical residency at UCSF and then came to Seattle to complete a fellowship in cardiology and interventional cardiology at University of Washington medical center. She was an interventional cardiologist in private practice for 10 years before returning to the UW system to complete a fellowship in palliative medicine.
