Dr. Stefan A. Pasternack earned his BA at Cornell University and his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine. He completed an Internship at the University of California Affiliated Hospitals, Los Angeles and his residency in Psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati General Hospital . He served two years as a Navy Psychiatrist from 1969-1971 stationed at National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda Maryland, becoming familiar with PTSD and the trauma suffered by Vietnam veterans.
He then joined full time faculty as an Instructor in Psychiatry at Georgetown University School of Medicine in July 1971 and became a full to Clinical Professor of Psychiatry in 1985. He was the first and founding Director of the Mental Health Care Unit, an inpatient psychiatric hospital at Georgetown University Medical Center from 1974-1978. Dr. Pasternack also completed training in psycho analysis at the Baltimore Washington Institute for Psychoanalysis and became an Associate Teaching Analyst there. He went on to help start a new institute the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. He started and served as Co Director of the Advanced Studies Program in Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis at Georgetown University School of Medicine from 1990 until 2004.
Dr. Pasternack served as a consultant to numerous governmental and non governmental organizations including the North Community Mental Health Center, Catholic Charities. The American Bankers Association, and the World Bank
Dr.Pasternack relocated to Florida in 2005. He served as Chair of the CME Committee an d the Psychotherapy Committee of the Florida Psychiatric Society and is a Teaching Analyst at the Florida psychoanalytic Institute in Miami Florida.
Dr. Pasternack was appointed as a Voluntary Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and also as Affiliate Professor of Psychiatry at the Charles E Schmidt School of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton
Dr. Pasternack is a Distinguished Life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, its highest honor. He is also a member of the American psychoanalytic Association
Dr,. Pasternack is a Director of the Ernst and Gertrude Ticho Charitable Foundation
Dr. Pasternack is in private practice of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis in Boca Raton Florida.
Dr. Pasternack is the author of numerous scientific articles in peer reviewed journals and the contributor of chapters to several text books.
