Brief Intro

Dr. Saunders Hupp has been practicing medicine in Mobile for the last 17 years. He has been married to his wife Carolyn, a Cardiology Nurse Practitioner, since 1977 and has sons Ryan and Jonathan. Trained first as a Chemical Engineer at the Georgia Institute of Technology, he initially came to Mobile in 1973 as a design engineer for Union Carbide at their plant in Chickasaw, Alabama. When the decision was made to change careers to medicine, he attended the University of Alabama in Birmingham medical school and received his Ophthalmology training at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida, and Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Hupp returned to Mobile to join the University of South Alabama in 1985 where he attained the position of Tenured Professor and Vice-Chairman in the Department of Ophthalmology. Currently, he is the President of The Medical Society of Mobile County and is proud to be one of the founding members of Vision Partners. He is Board Certified by The American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow in both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society. Dr. Hupp practices comprehensive general eye care but has special interest and expertise in cataract and refractive surgery as well as Neuro-ophthalmology, particularly as it is applied in the use of BOTOX (Botulinum toxin) injection. Dr. Hupp has performed thousands of successful cataract surgeries using the most advanced techniques including phacoemulsification, topical anesthesia (drop instead of injection) and correction of astigmatism. Cataract surgery now lasts less than 30 minutes and the patient is able to resume normal activities the next day! From his Neuro-ophthalmology fellowship experience, Dr. Hupp was able to be the first physician to bring BOTOX treatment to Mobile. Blepharospasm (uncontrolled blinking), neck dystonia (muscle spasm causing abnormal neck position and pain), and other types of uncontrollable muscle spasms are now treated with the use of BOTOX injections allowing those patients to resume a more normal and productive lifestyle. For his work with BOTOX, Dr. Hupp has been nationally recognized as a Physician of Excellence by the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation.
