Dr. Mathur is a fellowship trained spine surgeon and has been on the faculty since 2005.Dr. Mathur sees patients at the UNC Spine and Back Center.
Dr. Mathur completed his undergraduate and medical school at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Following medical school, he finished his training in Orthopaedic surgery at the State University of New York. He completed a comprehensive fellowship in spine surgery at RUSH Medical Center in Chicago. He has a keen interest in advancing science and has conducted basic science research at Dana Farber Cancer Institute-Harvard Medical School, and National Institute of Health. Dr. Mathur has a basic science and biomechanical laboratory for research at UNC where he is studying genes that cause spine problems, and testing spinal implants. He presents his research and lectures internationally.
Dr. Mathurs practice includes a broad range of spinal disorders including spinal deformity, arthritis, trauma, tumors, instability, and degenerative conditions. His surgical procedures range form minimally invasive and microsurgical approaches to complex spinal reconstructions. He offers some of the most advanced treatment options in the region- from the use of genetic engineering to eliminate the need for bone grafting to new proteins that make spinal fusion surgery less painful and debilitating.
