Sabha Ganai, MD, PhD, FACS, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the SIU School of Medicine. She is the Director of Gastrointestinal Oncology at the Simmons Cancer Institute. She is the only surgeon in Central and Southern Illinois who is Certified in both General Surgery and Complex General Surgical Oncology by the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Ganai earned her medical degree at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, pursued further doctoral training in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and completed her general surgery residency at Baystate Medical Center / Tufts University School of Medicine. Prior to joining SIU, she completed a Surgical Oncology fellowship at the University of Chicago with additional training in Surgical Ethics at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics.
Dr. Ganai is a surgical oncologist with expertise in the multidisciplinary management of hepatobiliary (liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts), pancreas, and foregut (stomach and esophagus) tumors, thyroid and parathyroid disease, as well as retroperitoneal sarcomas and gastrointestinal stromal tumors. She has special training in the HIPEC (hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy) procedure for peritoneal malignancies. Her academic interests are focused on health geographics, surgical education, ethics, palliative care, and translational research examining the biology of metastasis. She is the recipient of the 2015 Health Care Disparities Research Award from the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract.
Dr. Ganai is an ACS Commission on Cancer (CoC) Cancer Liason Physician and works to elevate cancer care in Springfield and beyond. She is on the editorial board for ASCO Connection and holds national leadership positions as an active committee member for the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Society for Surgical Oncology, and the Americas Hepatopancreaticobiliary Association. She seeks to provide compassionate care and serve the surgical needs of patients with cancer in Central and Southern Illinois.
