After 10 years in private practice he joined Spartanburg Regional Health Care System as Director of Senior Health. As Director of Senior Health from 1995 to 2006, Dr. Whitney was Principle Investigator for research studies, developed teaching programs, operated an outpatient specialty center for seniors, created a think tank for geriatric services and developed the largest group of geriatricians caring for seniors in long term care in the southeast. Dr. Whitney has served on the board of the American Medical Directors Association, Lutheran Homes of South Carolina, The Sage Institute, and the Charles Lea Center., As the Medical Director of several area facilities he advises them on the development of quality programs and services. He was selected by the American Geriatrics Society as the Geriatrician of the Year in 2004.
