Dr. Lingua is interested in adapting advances in adult surgical procedures to particularly difficult needs of the pediatric patient. For example, defining the role of refractive surgical technologies used for elective procedures in the adult, to address the problem of intractable amblyopia in the child. Lingua is developing surgical techniques to treat involuntary eye movement (nystagmus). He also is working toward solutions for children whose developmental disabilities preclude the use of traditional eyewear. These children, who have such severe refractive errors that go uncorrected, may advance developmentally if they could see without the eyeglasses, which they reject as part of their syndromal behavior. Defining the needs of the special needs patient is a top priority at UC Irvine Health.
