Robert Dressler, M.D., became vice chair of the Christiana Care Department of Medicine in March 2007.
In this role, Dr. Dressler is primarily responsible for providing administrative and clinical direction to the hospitalist program.
This program consists of two private-practice physician groups who medically manage patients in the hospital for primary-care physicians or specialists. Dr. Dressler works with the hospitalist groups' management regarding resource needs and utilization. He also monitors the groups' performance in meeting Christiana Care's goals for quality of care and patient safety.
Under the direction of the chair of medicine, Dr. Dressler is involved in program development within the department and is developing a departmental Web site.
A board-certified internist and nephrologist, Dr. Dressler works in private practice at Nephrology Associates, P.A., in Newark, Del. He has been with the practice since joining Christiana Care's Medical-Dental Staff in 1992.
Dr. Dressler earned his medical degree in 1983 from the Sackler School of Medicine at Tel Aviv University in Israel. He completed his internship and residency in the Bronx, N.Y., at Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center, where he was honored as Outstanding Resident in Internal Medicine in 1986. He completed a nephrology fellowship in 1988 at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, also in the Bronx.
After his fellowship, Dr. Dressler served as an instructor for the Department of Medicine at Albert Einstein College and, later, assistant professor at the Department of Medicine for the college's Montefiore Medical Center. At the same time, he was an attending at both the college's Bronx Municipal Hospital Center and The Jack D. Weiler Hospital.
Since joining Christiana Care and Nephrology Associates, Dr. Dressler has helped enhance nephrology care in the health system. He developed the continuous renal-replacement therapy program, a type of dialysis for critically-ill patients. He helped in the planning and development of the kidney transplant program, a joint initiative of Nephrology Associates, P.A., and Christiana Care. His current research is focused on longitudinal follow-up and outcomes of patients with chronic kidney disease in Delaware.
Dr. Dressler has served on several Christiana Care committees, including the Medical Executive Committee. He is a member of the American Society of Nephrology, the American College of Physicians and the American College of Physician Executives.
