I was born and raised in Wisconsin. After going away to college at Georgetown University, I returned to Wisconsin for medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin (formally Marquette Medical School). I completed my surgical training in Milwaukee and went on to do specialty training in vascular surgery in Toledo, Ohio. I finished my training in 1983, and my sense of adventure led me to Southern California, where I was very fortunate get a position here at Kaiser Permanente.
