Richard W. Petrella, MD, FACC, FACP, a staff cardiologist and medical director of Regional Affiliate Hospital Cardiovascular Services at Hamot, has brought a new level of expertise in interventional cardiology to the Hamot Heart Institute.
Shortly after arriving from The Cleveland Clinic in 1990, Dr. Petrella performed the first directional coronary atherectomy in the state of Pennsylvania. During the last 10 years, he has pioneered new technological developments at Hamot such as the first coronary stent implantation, peripheral atherectomy and percutaneous transmyocardial laser revascularization.
Dr. Petrella has an active interest in peripheral arterial intervention. This includes angioplasty, atherectomy, and stenting of subclavian, renal, illiac and leg arteries.
Dr. Petrella was the principle investigator of the Sapphire Carotid Stent Study at Hamot. He, along with nuclear radiology, also pioneered the first and only joint carotid intervention program in the Erie area. This program has performed more carotid stents than any other in the tri state area. Because of this programs success, Dr. Petrella and his group were to participate in the CAPTURE 2 clinical trials. CAPTURE 2 (Carotid ACCULINK/ACCUNET Post Approval Trial to Uncover Rare Events) is a government-sponsored, post-approval study of carotid artery stenting. A key objective of the study is to gather additional and more extensive clinical data to extend Medicare coverage of carotid stenting to a broader group of patients.
Dr. Petrella has fostered a close working relationship with regional physicians and patients. Most recently, he performed the first cardiac catheterization at Bradford Regional Medical Centers new catheterization laboratory.
Education and research are also interests to Dr. Petrella. He has published articles covering several aspects of infarction and has participated in many local and regional physician educational programs. Dr. Petrella also serves as an adviser to Guidant Corp.
Dr. Petrella and his wife, a former cardiac nurse at The Cleveland Clinic and the Hamot Heart Institute, have two children. In his free time, Dr. Petrella enjoys steelhead fishing.
