Physician Sketch:
Dr. Richard Edwards graduated from the University of Pittsburg School of Medicine in 1972 and after residencies at the New England Deaconess Hospital, the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, and Harvard Medical School, he received his specialty training in Hematology at the University of Connecticut Medical School. He joined the Faculty of the University of Connecticut Medical School in 1978 and rose to the rank of Professor of Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He moved to Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center in January 2002 as an Attending Physician at the Saint Francis/Mount Sinai Regional Cancer Center. He is also the Director of the Coagulation Program. His research and clinical interests involve disorders of hemostasis and thrombosis, bone marrow transplantation, and transfusion medicine. He serves as Associate Medical Director for the Connecticut Region of the American Red Cross where he is also the Director of the Immunogenetics Laboratory. While at the University of Connecticut Health Center, Dr. Edwards has won numerous times the highest teaching awards for teaching medical students, and is now directing the Educational Program of the Saint Francis Cancer Center. He was selected as one of Connecticut's Top Doctors by "Best Doctors in American€t in 2000 and 2001. Dr. Edwards holds an appointment as Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.
