Richard Oken, M.D. was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended Boston College and graduated from the University of California, San Francisco Medical School. He completed his pediatric training at the H.C. Moffitt Hospital in San Francisco and served as Chief Resident in Pediatrics at San Francisco General Hospital.
Dr. Oken is Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He has served as Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Alta Bates Hospital, President of the Medical Staff at Alta Bates Hospital, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Alta Bates-Herrick Hospital. He received the Outstanding Service Award from the Alta Bates Corporation in 1986, and has served as the President of Alta Bates Medical Group for the past several years. Dr. Oken has been a teaching attending physician at Children’s Hospital Oakland and San Francisco General Hospital and is a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at UCSF.
Dr. Oken and his wife, Judith, reside in Piedmont and have two grown children, Erik and Kelly. He enjoys long distance running, reading, traveling with his family, and enjoying time with his five grandchildren.
Dr. Oken joined East Bay Pediatrics in 1975, after a year of practice in Montclair.
