He attended Washington University, lettering in baseball and football, while earning a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Biology. He went on to St. Louis University for extended studies and to work in the research lab under Professor Dr. Hillel Laks, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UCLA. Dr. Ott attended Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, Illinois, earning his Medical Degree. Upon graduation, he was accepted into an internship and residency program at the University of California, Irvine. He went onto a cardiac fellowship at the University of Arizona, Tucson under Dr. Jack Copeland for two years. He is a board certified cardiothoracic surgeon, specializing in the field of end stage heart failure, coronary bypass surgery, valve replacement, transmyocardial revascularization, atrial fibrillation ablation and mechanical cardiac devices. Upon completion of his cardiac fellowship, Dr. Ott was recruited by the University of California, Irvine. He was the Director of Cardiac Transplantation and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Thoracic Surgery 1987-1995. Dr. Ott completed the first heart transplant in Orange County and went on to perform 39 successful operations over the next 7 years, many patients remain alive and active today. During this time, he expanded his practice to include the private sector of his community. In 1996, Dr. Ott was the first surgeon in Orange County to perform the minimally invasive beating heart surgery and first multi-vessel beating heart surgery. During his career, Dr. Ott has been an invited reviewer to scientific peer review journals, a guest lecturer in over 60 scientific symposiums, both national and international conferences, participated in clinical trials and published 54 original manuscripts in peer review journals. He has edited 2 books and authored 6 book chapters and has 28 published abstracts. Dr. Ott has built one of the most successful cardiac practices in Orange County while performing an average of 300+ open heart procedures and 75+ thoracic procedures annually. During his career, he has completed 7,361 cardiac pump cases to date. He is on staff at 3 area hospitals. Since inception of the California CABG Outcome Report Program in 2003, Dr. Ott’s case volume and operative mortality has reported his experience as the busiest cardiac surgeon in the state. Dr. Ott was awarded the most prestigious honor of membership in the American Association for Thoracic Surgery in 2001. He was the first surgeon in Orange County to receive this award since 1976 and is only 1 of 700 surgeons worldwide with this honored distinction.
