Peter Cataldo, M.D. is one of the country’s foremost experts in performing Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM), a minimally invasive treatment for patients with early stage rectal cancers and benign rectal polyps. Offering access to the entire rectum and more precise excision than standard transanal excision, TEM requires no surgical incision and is generally performed as an outpatient procedure, with more than 95% of patients discharged directly from the recovery room following surgery. Transanal endoscopic microsurgery is offered only at about 100 locations in the U.S., as it requires special equipment and surgeons with special training and experience. Dr. Peter Cataldo performs more TEM procedures than any surgeon in the country at The University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont. In addition, he teaches TEM throughout the U.S. and Europe and has authored the only textbook on Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery.
