Michael J. Guarino, M.D., is a senior staff member of Christiana Care's Department of Medicine and a partner in Medical Oncology Hematology Consultants, PA, located at Christiana Care's Helen F. Graham Cancer Center.
A board-certified medical oncologist , Dr. Guarino's areas of interest include clinical research and bone marrow transplant/cellular therapy. He specializes in the treatment of lung cancer, melanoma and gastrointestinal (GI) malignancies.
The author of numerous scientific and clinical papers, Dr. Guarino's extensive research background includes serving as a principal investigator for a number of pharmaceutical and other clinical trials sponsored by Christiana Care's Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP).
The National Cancer Institute-funded CCOP plays a critical part enrolling patients in clinical studies for every major type of cancer. The CCOP has ongoing clinical trials in different cancer types, including breast, lung, colon, rectum and prostate cancers.
In 2008, Dr. Guarino's practice was one of only 10 community oncology practices in the country to receive honors from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and The ASCO Cancer Foundation for efforts to improve care of people with cancer through participation in clinical trials.
In addition to CCOP, Dr. Guarino is a clinical investigator on the National Cancer Institute-sponsored Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB); the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP), a clinical trials cooperative group supported since its inception by NCI; and the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG), a not-for-profit organization that promotes excellence in the quality and integrity of clinical and basic scientific research in the field of gynecologic malignancies.
A graduate of Thomas Jefferson Medical College in 1979, Dr. Guarino went on to complete his residency and internship in Internal Medicine at Christiana Care from 1979 to 1982. He finished a Medical Oncology fellowship at the University of Rochester-Strong Memorial Hospital in 1984.
During his distinguished career at Christiana Care and in private practice, Dr. Guarino has received a number of clinical and academic appointments and is the recipient of a variety of academic and clinical achievement honors.
A Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Medical School, Dr. Guarino is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Internal Medicine/American College of Physicians and many other national and local medical societies and organizations.
