Following graduation from Bucknell University, Michael Axe received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in 1979, where he continued for a year's internship before surgical residency with the Medical Center of Delaware through 1981 and orthopaedic residency at the University of Pittsburgh through 1984. After sports and trauma fellowships with the Hughston Sports Medicine Hospital (Columbus, Ga.) and Harborview Hospital (Seattle, Wash.), Dr. Axe was a founding partner of First State Orthopaedics in Newark, Del., in 1985, where he remains as director of the All Sports Clinic of Delaware. He has also been a teaching staff member of the Medical Center of Delaware since 1985 and has three continuing appointments with the University of Delaware: professor of physical therapy since 1992; medical director of the Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program beginning in 1993; and faculty member for biomedical engineering research since 1994.
Dr. Axe is a co-host of "Youth in Sports," a weekly live cable television program started in 1994, and he has delivered the Blue Hen Injury Report on WRDX (94.7 FM) since 1999. Beginning in 2003, he has served as high-school basketball injury analyst and commentator on WDEL (1150 AM), and in 2004 his "Axe Facts" and "Ask Axe" columns were featured in local print media. Dr. Axe has given many presentations concerning sports medicine and has served numerous sports medicine consultantships, medical advisorships, and team-physician appointments.
Dr. Axe currently holds active affiliation with Christiana Hospital and St. Francis Hospital, as well as courtesy affiliation with the A.I. DuPont Institute. He has served on numerous academic thesis and dissertation committees, authored many peer-reviewed journal articles, and is the recipient of considerable grant funding for sports-medicine research.
