Dr. Michael Kelly, DO is an orthopedic physician at The Orthopedic Institute of New Jersey. He is double board certified in internal medicine and sports medicine with a concentration in non-operative orthopedics.
In addition to his position at The Orthopedic Institute of New Jersey, Dr. Kelly is a school/team doctor for academic institutions including Seton Hall University, Caldwell College and Centenary College. He also services Newark Academy as well as schools in Whippany Park, Hanover Park and Florham Park. He is currently a physician with the State of New Jersey Athletic Control Board and a member of the New Jersey Medical Reserve Corps (NJMRC).
Dr. Kelly completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA, where he had the opportunity to work with several Philadelphia sports teams, including the Eagles, Flyers, Phantoms and Kixx.
He completed an internal medicine residency at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY and received his medical degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury, NY. Dr. Kelly attended Rutgers University where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in biology.
Dr. Kelly has been published in numerous medical journals and has authored three books: Death Touch: The Science Behind the Legend of Dim Mak, The Dim Mak Medical Guide and Fight Medicine. He has been featured on The History Channel and Spike TV and has been quoted in many magazines and online news sites including Esquire and Maxum. Dr. Kelly has also covered numerous championship professional mixed martial arts and boxing events on HBO, Showtime, ESPN/ESPN2, Spike TV, CBS and PPV.
Dr. Kelly has an interest in applying modern non-operative technology to common orthopedic conditions. He is one of the first doctors in the northeast to embrace new treatment options including viscosupplementation and platelet-rich plasma injections (PRP). He also was one of the first to perform minimally invasive percutaneous debridement and aspiration of diseased tendons, muscles and ligaments using an ultrasonic cutting and debriding device (F.A.S.T. procedure).
A life-long martial arts enthusiast, Dr. Kelly currently holds a high-ranking black belt and was inducted into the Universal Martial Arts Hall of Fame as the “Outstanding Man of The Yearâ€. He was also a competitive high school wrestler, tallying over 100 career victories.
