Leah Steffensmeier, M.D., an Obstetrician/Gynecologist, joined The Women's Center in 2005. A native of Houghton, Dr. Steffensmeier returned to her hometown area to practice medicine after completing her residency at St. Johns Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis. Dr. Steffensmeier's decision to join The Womens Center was motivated by her desire to spend more time with her family. She also credits her family, specifically her mother, for influencing her decision to choose to pursue a career in medicine.
"Ive had a general interest in healthcare for as long as I can remember. My mother is a nurse and I always thought I would be, too. I ultimately decided that becoming a physician would be the best way I could help others within the community" said Dr. Steffensmeier. Dr. Steffensmeier is a graduate of the University of Iowa Roy Carver College of Medicine. She believes that women need to "create more time for themselves to focus on enjoying life and to actually care for themselves." Dr. Steffensmeier resides in the Fort Madison area with her husband Jesse and their two children Henry and Lucy.
