I was born and grew up in Hawaii in a beautiful valley on the island of Oahu. I went to college and medical school at the nearby University of Hawaii. I came to Oregon for dermatology training at Oregon Health and Science University and never left. Patients often ask me, especially during the dark, cold, and wet Winter, how I could choose to live in Oregon over Hawaii - no competition. I even convinced my Hawaii born parents to move nearby to us.
Actually, my first visit to Oregon came in high school when my school band was invited to participate in the Rose Festival. I am lucky to have a wonderful family consisting of my wife and young son and daughter. Becoming a doctor and specifically a dermatologist was a pretty easy decision. I spent a lot of time as a patient in dermatologist's offices growing up which helped initiate my idea of becoming a dermatologist.
About my practice
I spent many years practicing dermatology at Kaiser Permanente in clinics where I was often the only dermatologist. I moved to Sunnybrook Medical Office in 2007 where I constantly have multiple colleagues around me. I feel lucky to be surrounded by really excellent dermatologists whom I can discuss cases with, get immediate second opinions from, and learn from.
We have caring and knowledgeable nurses who greatly help me to care for patients. I am a general medical dermatologist, meaning I will see and take care of any kind of skin condition from newborn to super seniors. I especially enjoy helping patients in detecting and removing skin cancers. Patients will sometimes apologize for coming in for a growth that turns out to be normal, but I am just as happy to be able to re-assure them that it is fine and should be left alone. How I thrive
My time away from work consists mainly of family time. One of my home jobs includes being the entertainment coordinator of the family. Examples of activities include a bike outing, hiking, family movie night, or fruit picking at a farm.
If I were not a doctor, I would probably be a school librarian as I really enjoy finding a library book that my kids, wife, or parents love. I am also a tennis player, an earth-bound snowboarder, a fair-weather bike commuter, a self-taught and poor pianist, and an avid reader of newspapers, books, and magazines.
