Dr. Kari Barnard is a board-certified Family Medicine physician with additional training in Surgical Obstetrics. Originally from Northern California, she completed her undergraduate studies in Spanish at San Francisco State University before honing her interest in medicine. She obtained her medical degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Mexico and completed a Family Medicine residency in her hometown of Redding, CA at Shasta Community Health Center. After developing a significant interest in women’s health and obstetrics during her residency, she then completed a Surgical/Advanced Obstetrics fellowship at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
Dr. Barnard’s experiences in Mexico and work with vulnerable communities in residency motivated her desire to work with rural populations and she is excited to be establishing practice in a unique community at Southwest Health. One of the things she enjoys most within Family Medicine is the ability to treat the entire family, from pregnancy to the care of a newborn, to adulthood. She finds it rewarding to get to participate in the birth of babies, such a special and intimate moment for families, and delights in watching as these babies grow into children as her patients. Dr. Barnard also enjoys performing procedures, women’s health topics, nutrition as medicine, and being a resource for patients as they take control of their health.
She is excited to plant roots in Montezuma County with her husband, their son, fur children, and future pack goats. She and her family enjoy doing anything outside including hiking, camping, skiing, and kayaking. She’s excited to become a mountain biker. Aside from this, she’s an avid costume and clothing seamstress, baker, cook, enjoys reading, going to bluegrass music festivals, and staying current with The Great British Baking Show.
