The two main elements of Dr. Giangola’s care are first to improve the life of all categories of people with diabetes, and second, to prevent diabetes related complications such as heart, kidney, and nerve disease. Many physicians are “glucocentric”, that is, they look mainly at the level of glucose control or the “A1c hemoglobin.” But management of diabetes is so much more than that. It is, first and foremost, maintaining a healthy lifestyle. That can best and, perhaps only, be accomplished by consultation with a team of diabetes specialists comprised of nurses and dietitians who are certified diabetes educators. Secondly, it consists of remaining as active as possible to whatever extent one can. But above all he tries to put care into YOUR hands rather than his, the way it should be!
