Dr. John Walter Kelley joined the Atlanta Cardiology Group in June, 2006, practicing in Blairsville and Hiawassee. Kelley grew up on a dairy farm in the Woods Grove Community in Young Harris, Ga. He attended school in Hayesville, NC, graduated from college at North Georgia College in Dahlonega and attended the Medical College of Georgia. He then served his internship and residency at the Medical College of Georgia where he was named "intern of the year" followed by a cardiology fellowship at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Dr. Kelley developed one of the premier cardiovascular practices in Augusta, Georgia, practicing there for 28 years during which time he was instrumental in forming University Hospital's first cardiac rehabilitation program and the Georgia Heart Institute of Cardiovascular Technology program, serving as the medical director since inception until March 2006. Dr. Kelley also was the chairman of the cardiac catheterization and angioplasty/stent program for many years. In 1980, he did 3 of the first coronary angioplasties ever performed in the Southeast. His practice was the first in Augusta (1987) to offer and provide nuclear cardiac imaging in an office setting.
Throughout his years in Augusta many patients would travel the 3 1 hours from the north Georgia mountains to Augusta for their initial diagnostic and subsequent annual evaluations. Dr. Kelley always knew he would return home one day to finish his cardiology career in the mountains. When he's not tending to his patients, Dr. Kelley can be found on his farm working with his Black Angus cattle or at school or church functions with his wife, Angie and children.
