John R. Means: General Surgeon John Means, M.D. is a member of the Northwest Healthcare medical staff and practices at Northwest Montana Surgical Associates and Surgery Clinic at North Valley Hospital. Dr. Means attended medical school at the University of Dublin, Trinity College School of Medicine in Dublin, Ireland, and completed his general surgery residency at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh. He was awarded a laparoscopic fellowship in bariatrics and general surgery at Duke University Medical Center. Before joining Northwest Healthcare, he was a minimally invasive bariatric and general surgeon for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Means specializes in minimally invasive (small incision) laparoscopic surgery and serves patients with a wide spectrum of general surgery needs including gall bladder removal, hernia repair, cancer surgery, diverticulitis and more. He has special training in a unique procedure called Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS), which offers the potential for no visible scar and faster recovery time compared with open procedures. Dr. Means also performs daVinci robotic-assisted minimally invasive general surgery. He feels it is important to keep his patients well informed on risks, benefits and details of their procedures, so he spends considerable time discussing options and helping them choose what is best for them.
