Family medicine is a field that provides an opportunity for training in a wide area of skills. This makes it an ideal specialty for people interested in rural health care. I want to have a practice that provides a full range of primary care in a rural community in the Pacific Northwest. This would include following patients from birth to the end of their life; providing OB care; promoting a health lifestyle; preventive screening for colon cancer, heart disease and other illnesses; and being available at the end of life to offer help and support to patients and their families.
