Brief Intro

oel H. Hurt, MD, is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and fellowship-trained in all aspects of arthroscopy and sports medicine. He attended medical school at UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, one of the top 20 medical schools in the nation. After graduating in the top quarter of his class, Dr. Hurt completed his residency in orthopedics at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, where he received comprehensive training in general, pediatric, and trauma orthopedics. He specialized in sports medicine and arthroscopy training at the University of Kentucky before returning home to Austin in 2005. Dr. Hurt is an Austin native, growing up in Rollingwood and attending Westlake High School where he was a member of the swim team. From an early age he was predisposed to "fixing and figuring out things;" his childhood loves were Lego, go-karts, brain-teasers, and intricate forts. When Dr. Barbara Bergin, a founding member of Texas Orthopedics, built her house in the vacant lot next door and thus displaced Dr. Hurt's forts in the doing, he moved on to bigger and better projects. While in high school he placed an ad for an old mustang convertible (his dream car) and found one in need of much work. Unpersuaded by his parents' objections, he bought a book on the classic car (having never worked on cars before), had it towed to his house, and restored much of the engine, braking system, and interior in his parents' garage, using money made from pizza delivery. In hindsight, it's easy to see how orthopedics is a natural extension of Dr. Hurt's lifelong interests: finding the answer to the mystery and then surgically fixing whatever is in need. At Texas Orthopedics, Dr. Hurt's philosophy is patient-centered. He takes great care to address all of a patient's questions, to spend adequate time with each patient, and to treat everyone with respect as an individual rather than as a file number. A patient entrusts his or her body to a surgeon and therefore has a right to have the diagnosis and treatment plan explained in terms he or she can understand. The patient and physician can then determine the right course given his or her unique circumstances and goals. Finally, the end result of any treatment, and especially surgery, is judged primarily by the patient's satisfaction. A "great surgery" that does not address the patient's complaints is not a success. Dr. Hurt’s favorite tongue-in-cheek professional mottos include, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and “If it hurts when you do that, don’t do it.” Dr. Hurt met his wife Ashley in the emergency room at Seton Hospital in 2007, where she was working as an RN. They have three sons and a daughter. Dr. Hurt's hobbies include hunting, biking, and working out. He and his wife are members of the Austin Stone Church.
