Dr. Shakin graduated from the NY Medical College. He completed a residency at Bellevue Hospital and his retinal fellowship at the Wills Eye Hospital. Dr. Shakin is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the International College of Surgeons, and the New York Academy of Medicine. He also retains membership status in the Retina Society and the Vitreous Society.
Dr. Shakin holds the academic title of Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He won the distinguished service certificate from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 1988 and is the co-director of the Vitreoretinal Service of North Shore-Long Island Jewish Medical Centers. Dr. Shakin is the co-investigator in several national research studies.
