Dr. Lovallo is the upper extremity specialist for the Anderson Orthopaedic Clinic, and is an expert in conditions involving the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. The majority of his work includes total shoulder replacement, arthroscopic shoulder surgery, sports medicine injuries, rotator cuff tears, elbow, and hand surgery. He also specializes in Reverse Total Shoulder Replacements for patients that have large rotator cuff tears and would not benefit from the standard total shoulder replacement surgery. Dr Lovallo performs approximately 70 total shoulder replacements per year.
A Connecticut native, Dr. Lovallo received his medical degree form the University of Connecticut and completed a hand surgery fellowship at Harvard Medical School. He then became an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Connecticut before moving to the Washington, DC area. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has earned a certificate of added qualification in hand surgery. He is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and lectures on hand and upper extremity injuries.
Dr. Lovallo writes for scientific publications and books and has been published in DeLee and Drez's Orthopaedic Sports Medicine textbook. He is currently an upper extremity consultant to the Washington Redskins and the DC United professional soccer team. He is a consultant for DePuy Medical, the leading total shoulder joint replacement company in the US. As a total shoulder arthroplasty consultant for DePuy, he has produced a state of the art video on total shoulder replacement. This video will be distributed by DePuy.
In addition, Dr Lovallo invented a finger joint prosthesis and is working with Nitinol Technologies, a Seattle based company, to invent and implement a total shoulder prosthesis which will not loosen or wear. This state of the art super-elastic metal, Nitinol-60 does not corrode, wear or deform. This metal could become the material of choice for total shoulder replacements.
In his spare time, Dr. Lovallo enjoys the company of his wife, two sons and daughter. He also enjoys activities such as golf, skiing, reading, chess and coaching his son's sports teams. Dr. Lovallo has a deep level of concern and empathy for his patients. He states, "One of the things that I am proudest of is the level of personal concern for our patients. I think that has to be foremost in a physician's mind."
