Dr. Michel received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minn., in 1972. After a medical internship at the University of Utah Affiliated Hospitals, Salt Lake City, Utah, from 1972 through 1973, he entered the U.S. Navy and served until 1975. He then served as an internal medicine resident at the University of Minnesota Affiliated Hospitals in Minneapolis from 1976 through 1978. For the next four years he conducted a private internal medicine practice in Jasper, Ga. Dr. Michel returned to formal medical training as a cardiology fellow at the University of Louisville Affiliated Hospitals, Louisville, Ky., from 1984 through 1986, when he joined Parkway Cardiology Associates, P.C. Dr. Michel is board certified in cardiovascular disease, internal medicine and critical care medicine. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the Roane-Anderson Medical Society, the Tennessee Medical Association, the American Heart Association and is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Michel is originally from Minneapolis. He and his wife, Sheila Balthrop Michel, a native of Pensacola, Fla., live in Oak Ridge, and they have four children: Tess (born in 1984); Julia (born in 1985); Florence (born in 1989); and James, Jr., (born in 1991). Dr. Michel enjoys family events, bicycling and foreign travel. Dr. Michel is involved in yearly medical mission trips to Honduras. He is also active in Habitat for Humanity of Anderson County.
