Brief Intro

Board-certified in general surgery, Dr. Kliefoth received his medical degree from the Northwestern University Medical School. He completed post-graduate surgical training at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. While surgery has long been considered a life-saving science, today’s diagnostic tools and technological advances make this specialty better equipped for outstanding results that could not be attained even eight to ten years ago. As a general surgeon, Dr. Kliefoth is trained to treat many types of surgical disease. Many surgical illnesses require an operation as the most effective treatment; however, others can be managed without an operation. A general surgeon is trained to recognize all aspects of medical problems and can treat common, everyday problems as well as severe, life-threatening diseases. A brief overview of problems Dr. Kliefoth may treat is as follows: Abdominal problems often require surgical intervention. These range from acute problems such as appendicitis or perforated ulcers to more chronic problems such as gallbladder disease, ulcer disease and colon problems. Cancer can develop in the abdomen, also requiring an operation. Breast diseases are a common problem in women. Treatment sometimes requires surgical excision, but often needle biopsies can be done. While most breast lumps are benign, when a breast cancer is found breast conservation treatment can almost always be done. Vascular (circulation) problems can frequently be improved with a surgical procedure. Many skin problems can easily be biopsied or treated in the office. Glandular problems such as diseases of the thyroid gland, pancreas or adrenal glands occasionally require operation as the most effective treatment. Hernias occur in many people and are best treated by surgery. Spider veins require treatment when they are painful or cosmetically unappealing. Dr. Kliefoth will determine if spider and varicose veins can be treated with compression stockings, or if corrective measures such as sclerotherapy, surgery and light source/laser treatment are required. In some cases, a combination of treatment methods is the best answer.
