What Sets Us Apart?
Howard V. Peskin, DDS
My profession is a very important part of my life. I love being able to help children and their parents keep their teeth healthy. I realize how lucky I am to become even a small part of so many people's lives and have some impact on their futures.
In my journey to becoming a pediatric dentist and an orthodontist, I attained the following educational and professional certificates:
Bachelor of Science from the City College of New York, 1966
Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from New York University College of Dentistry, 1970
United States Navy AGD program, Philadelphia Naval Hospital, 1970-1971
Master of Science in Dentistry and Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from Boston University, 1976
Certificate in Orthodontics from Boston University, 1978Â
I have taught at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) School of Dental Medicine for 32 years, which keeps me abreast of all advances in pediatric dentistry and orthodontics. I currently teach graduate pediatric dentistry and graduate orthodontics. In addition, I take a minimum of 16 hours of continuing education per year covering various topics regarding both specialties.
I have spent 40 years practicing dentistry, and 31 of those have been focused on pediatric dentistry and orthodontics. I love what I do, and I truly care about each one of our patients. We have created a family-friendly environment where all feel comfortable and children actually look forward to seeing us. I've even had parents tell me they don't like driving by our office because the children remind them it’s time to go visit the dentist!
Kids love us because we have a good time and celebrate their healthy smiles. We have a Sparkling Smiles program, in which the children have their photo taken to display on our photo wall, and they can earn special prizes for good dental home care.
I love the fact that we see children from infancy through college. Our goal is to educate both parents and patients so children can keep their teeth for their entire lives. I enjoy watching children grow both dentally and mentally from babies into young adults. I have many patients who are second- and even third-generation patients, which is extremely rewarding.
I grew up in the Bronx in New York City, and I have spent the last 32 years of my life in Charleston. I am proud to have raised my family in such a loving community. My wife, Sandy, and I have two grown daughters and six grandchildren!
When I’m not in the office, I spend as much time as I can on my boat, which is more than 22 years old now. Sandy and I also love to travel when we can. Our favorite places are US National Parks, but we have also been to Europe and the Galapagos Islands. When I was in the Navy, Sandy and I spent three years in Japan, where we traveled extensively. I am also an avid reader, and I particularly enjoy mysteries.
I believe it is important to be an active part of our community. Charleston has an annual Kids' Fair, and I have been involved since its inception more than 20 years ago. My practice also sponsors a baseball team and soccer team for the City of Charleston Recreation Department, and we support local school yearbooks and other fundraising efforts.
