Brief Intro

Dr. Gurwitz is a native of San Antonio and received his Medical Degree in 1989 from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dallas, Texas. He completed his internship in General Surgery and his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee. Following completion of his residency, he completed a Spinal Surgery Fellowship at South Texas Spinal Clinic in San Antonio. Dr. Gurwitz did his undergraduate work receiving a B.A. in Biology at the University of Texas at Austin. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery as well as a member of the San Antonio Orthopedic Society, Vanderbilt Orthopedic Society, Texas Medical Association, Bexar County Medical Society, North American Spine Society, and is a Fellow of The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. During his years of college and medical school, Dr. Gurwitz received honors for scholastic excellence and has authored and presented many scientific papers to national meetings on spinal surgery and disease. His interest in Medical Education has led to his current position of Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Currently, he is actively involved in clinical research of new and upcoming spinal surgical techniques and innovations. Dr. Gurwitz sees patients at the Stone Oak office adjacent to the The Spine and Surgical Hospital of South Texas. Surgery is preformed primarily at The Spine and Surgical Hospital of South Texas and Stone Oak Methodist Hospital but Dr. Gurwitz has privileges at most of San Antonio's hospitals. Dr. Gurwitz's goal is to provide the highest quality of surgical and medical spinal care expected by his patients, educate them on their disease process or surgical procedure, and help them to understand the goals and expectations of treatment. This is all in an attempt to allow his patients to play an integral role in the decision making process with regard to their treatment either medically or surgically with the ultimate goal being improvement in quality of life and return to normal function.
