Dr. Gerard Fumo is a physician who has dedicated his life to the field of medical oncology and hematology. He knows that treating cancer is more than attacking the disease. It’s about caring for a person during difficult times. He also knows that personalized care means a lot more than knowing his patients’ names and hobbies. He chose to specialize in medical oncology and hematology precisely because of exciting current and forthcoming advances in the field. These advances are allowing for evermore highly individualized treatment programs precisely calibrated to each patient.
Born in New York City and raised in Upstate New York, Dr. Fumo came to MOH because of the direct contact MOH doctors have with their patients. "I get closer," he says, "to that perfect individualized care that is so important in cancer medicine." He enjoys working with patients who are inquisitive, patients who engage actively with him to make the best decisions for themselves. "Our patients become our friends."
Dr. Fumo has a particular interest in helping people with gastrointestinal malignancies, lung cancer, breast cancer, and hematologic malignancies. Recent advances in the management of these diseases have him excited about more progress still to come. He is even playing a direct role in that progress, having patented a new drug indication that may help thousands.
Dr. Fumo is proud of the work he did treating the men and women who serve our country while he worked at the National Naval Medical Center. Now at MOH’s MidState Medical Center facility, he is proud to serve the men and women who serve our community.
Dr. Fumo, his wife, and their children make the most of every season in the Berkshires. "Spring we hike, bike, fish, and wait for the blooming trees and flowers. Summer we get out on the lakes. Fall we enjoy the foliage." In the winter, Dr. Fumo particularly loves to spend his free time skiing with his boys. In fact, he harbors a secret fantasy of a second career as a ski patroller, though, if he ever leaves MOH, it will more likely be to become a biomedical engineer.
