Brief Intro

Dr. Gayan Poovendran specializes in primary care sports medicine. He has extensive experience in the non-surgical treatment of sports or activity-related injuries as well as working with patients to prevent injury, improve performance and enhance overall health. Dr. Poovendran obtained his undergraduate degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, followed by an MD degree from Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica. He completed a residency in family medicine and a fellowship in sports medicine at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Poovendran is experienced in all aspects of sports medicine and athletic injuries. He's worked as a personal trainer as well as served as team physician for multiple athletic teams, including Ohio University's football team, the National Hockey League's Columbus Blue Jackets, Franklin Heights High School's (Columbus, Ohio) football, wrestling and track & field teams, and Dennison University's (Granville, Ohio) football, lacrosse, basketball, and track & field teams. Effective Fall 2015, he is also the team physician for Calvary Christian Academy. Dr. Poovendran has also served as the sideline physician for a wide variety of athletic tournaments and marathons in Columbus and Dublin, Ohio, including the Arnold Schwarzenegger Sports Festival (20,000 athletes in boxing, Olympic lifting, cheerleading, gymnastics, pump and run, survival race, wrestling and CrossFit competitions), the Cap City Marathon, Emerald City Half Marathon, Ohio State Division 1 State Hockey Championship, Ohio State Division 1 District and Sectionals Wrestling Tournament, and the Last Chance for Boston Marathon qualifier. He has co-published and lectured on topics related to athlete wellness, including concussions, neurological disorders, leg pain and shoulder pain.
