I grew up in the Adirondacks of northern New York, attended Cornell University for undergraduate work and SUNY Upstate Medical School in Syracuse, New York. After starting the first cardiac rehabilitation program in Salt Lake City in 1974, I became very interested in the role of physical activity in health. I was appointed by Governor Calvin Rampton as Chair of the new Utah Council of Physical Fitness. The Council was instrumental in providing running clinics, races and educational events for the general public. I was an active participant in the Utah running activities completing many 10K races and 4 marathons. When not practicing medicine or actively engaging in running, hiking, skiing, and cycling, I am an accomplished jazz pianist who regularly performs with jazz groups in the Intermountain region. I have made several recordings of jazz music, and my group, Amnesia, performed at the Telluride Jazz Festival in 1985.
