I was born in New Jersey into a large extended family, and lived there until I went to college in Boston. Growing up, California seemed like a different world to me. Warm weather was always my preference, but Florida was a lot closer, so I didn't visit California until I was a resident in internal medicine in Rochester, New York. Once I saw sunny California, I knew I wanted to live here. I moved to Los Angeles in 1984, and began a fellowship in medical oncology at the City of Hope National Medical Center. I joined Kaiser Permanente shortly thereafter and have remained here ever since. In 2005, my family and I moved to San Diego. I have a wife, two sons, and a cat.
