Brief Intro

Elaine G. Hathaway, M.D. graduated from Indiana University with honors and then attended Indiana University Medical School. Following an internship at Georgetown University Hospital, she returned to Indiana to pursue a residency in ophthalmology. Dr. Hathaway became Board Certified in Ophthalmology in 1983. Following the completion of her residency Dr. Hathaway was asked to join the Indiana University School of Medicine faculty. She served as a full time faculty member and Chief of Ophthalmology at the Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis for seven years and then continued as a part time faculty member after entering private practice. During her time at IU she was a leader in cataract surgery and set up the first courses in phacoemulsification (advanced cataract surgery) that were given at the university. Dr. Hathaway moved to New Jersey at the end of 1995. In 1998 she joined the faculty of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, joined the staff of St. Peter's University Hospital and co-founded Brunswick Eye Associates. In 2014 Brunswick Eye Associates disbanded and closed. Dr. Hathaway started Hathaway Eyecare which is now part of Somerset Ophthalmology Associates in Somerset, NJ Since the start of her career, Dr. Hathaway has played an active role in the vision community. She has given numerous lectures, both to community organizations and physician groups and appeared on a number of television programs as an expert regarding cataract surgery, glaucoma and eye diseases in general. She has served on the Board of Directors of Women in Ophthalmology and the Indiana Academy of Ophthalmology. From 2004-2009 she was a member of the Better Vision Institute (BVI), a professional advisory panel to the Vision Council. She served as Chairperson of the BVI from 2007-2009. Dr. Hathaway is a comprehensive ophthalmologist who specializes in everything from routine examinations to complex surgery. She treats a variety of patients, from school age children to the elderly, and is an expert in contact lenses, cataract surgery and the diagnosis and management of eye diseases. Dr. Hathaway is married and the mother of two grown daughters. She is known for her unique sensitivity and caring nature. She takes the time not only to carefully examine her patients, but also to fully explain their conditions and answer their questions.
