Dr. Messina is a native of New York City and a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He was an Internal Medicine resident at Michael Reese Medical Center (a University of Chicago affiliate), and completed his neurology residency at Washington University and Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, MO.
Dr. Messina is active on the national scene through his work with the American Headache Society, the American Academy of Neurology and the National Headache Foundation. He has actively been involved in patient outreach in the media by appearing in the television show, Mystery Diagnosis. He has also produced and directed the award winning documentary, "Life and Migraine" for PBS (2005) as well as the award winning dramatic film, "Lily's Mom" (2011). Both projects were developed to expand the public's knowledge of painful headache disorders.
He has been actively involved in headache research and the applications of artificial intelligence to the practice of medicine. He pioneered the use of electronic medical records and holds a U.S. patent for the computer language used in his clinics record system.
