Dr. David Wong aims to treat his patients as if they were his family. “There needs to be an immense amount of compassion and listening in order to truly understand the patients’ situation and their personal needs and goals,” he said. Being able to make a difference in the lives of his patients by decreasing their pain while increasing their level of function through minimally invasive procedures is what first drew Dr. Wong to the field of pain management. “There is immense satisfaction and pride when I am able to see dramatic changes and improvement of patients after their treatments.”After completing a bachelor’s degree from the Colegio de La Salle, he earned his Doctor of Medicine from the Universidad de Panama, both in the Republic of Panama.Dr. Wong completed his internship in general surgery at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. He concluded his residency in anesthesiology at the Illinois-based Rush University Medical Center. A fellowship in pain medicine followed and was completed at the University of Michigan.Dr. Wong brings nearly a decade of experience to his work at the National Spine and Pain Centers. One evolving area he is excited about in the pain management field is advancements with minimally invasive lumbar fixation and decompression. This development gives older patients that were not surgery candidates the opportunity to have their pain reduced or eliminated. Dr. Wong recognizes that every patient’s condition is different. Therefore, he knows to tailor a specific regimen plan. “Pain medicine may be necessary for certain conditions but as pain physicians, we are able to do so many minimally invasive procedures and interventions to get patients comfortable and improve their quality of life,” he said. “I feel privileged to be able to give that other option to my patients.” Every day, Dr. Wong learns from his patients because they push him to not only become a better physician but a better person as well. “I still very much enjoy the challenge and the opportunity to put my best effort toward improving the lives of my patients.”In his downtime, Dr. Wong enjoys spending time with his kids as well as traveling, eating amazing food and meeting new people. He may also be found in the outdoors either hiking, playing tennis, or walking.
