Brief Intro

Dr. David Pederson is board certified in cardiovascular disease and clinical cardiac electrophysiology and has extensive military, academic and clinical experience. Dr. Pederson has a Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical engineering from Loyola Merrymount University in Los Angeles, California. He received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He completed both his internship and residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, as Lieutenant Colonel. Dr. Pederson completed his fellowship in cardiology at Letterman Army Medical Center at the Presidio of San Francisco in California, and his fellowship in cardiac electrophysiology at University of California in San Francisco. Dr. Pederson practiced on the staff of Wilford Hall from 1990 to 1996 while also serving terms as Director of Electrophysiology and Cardiac Pacing and Director of the Cardiology Fellowship Program. He subsequently served as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Services in Bethesda, Maryland, as Clinical Instructor at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and as Assistant Chairman of the Department of Cardiology at Wilford Hall. In 1996, Dr. Pederson joined Austin Heart, a group cardiology practice, where he practiced as an electrophysiologist until joining Cardiology Clinic of San Antonio in 2002. “I chose medicine as a profession because I’ve always enjoyed the science part of medicine and always wanted to help people. Cardiac electrophysiology is a field where I can apply medical and surgical skills to diagnose and treat challenging, complicated conditions and watch my patients improve dramatically. It’s very rewarding.” Shortly after the launch of the Cardio-Hospitalist Program at Methodist Hospital, Dr. Pederson performed the life-saving, emergency procedure to implant a permanent pacemaker in Benito’s heart. Watch Benito’s story. Dr. Pederson is also experienced in performing a cutting-edge Convergent Maze, or Hybrid, procedure combining cardiac electrophysiology and minimally-invasive cardiac surgery to restore normal heart rhythms in patients with certain types of atrial fibrillation. Dr. Pederson and Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. James Garrison perform the hybrid procedure at Methodist Hospital.
