Smith began his career as president of the American Junior Red Cross in 1960, a time when Red Cross was focused on leadership training. He went on to MIT for his BS in electrical engineering then NYU where he completed the MS in EE. His interests at that time were electronic circuit design and statistical communications theory, the science of extracting signals from noise. He entered medical school at the URMC and began studies for his PhD in neuroanatomy. Well before biomedical engineering ever became a discipline, Smith saw the value of applying engineering principles to core problems in medicine. His dream became reality when he won a full scholarship for his MD and PhD studies to do just this.
