By the time Iowa-born Randy Lewis started medical school, he knew he wanted to make a career out of caring for people. Colleagues urged him to focus on surgery. But delivering babies was what really captivated him. He chose a specialty that included obstetrics, surgery and general medicine--one that has allowed him to develop relationships with patients over many years, even now that he is no longer delivering babies.
“I feel privileged to take care of people and honored to be included as part of their health care team,” he says. “I just enjoy people.”
His residency at the esteemed Mayo Clinic included shifts at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital. “We took care of some very affluent people and also delivered babies for women who had never seen a doctor. We were able to do a lot of great things for people, and it gave me a great perspective on the spectrum of life.”
“I try not to let my ego get in the way of helping people make decisions,” Dr. Lewis says. “I try to reach decisions based on what a patient feels she needs, not just what I think is best for her.”
Dr. Lewis has practiced at the Downtown Clinic since 1977
