Dale Burleson serves as chief of the colon and rectal surgery division at Baylor Regional Medical Center in his home city of Plano, Texas. Recognized for his expertise in laparoscopic colorectal surgery, Dr. Burleson teaches classes and conducts research-based presentations on numerous topics for medical associations, conventions and universities around the U.S.
He is a highly sought after speaker and widely published for his expertise and knowledge in the field of colorectal health. He currently teaches laparoscopic surgery and advanced hemorrhoid techniques (PPH and stapled hemorrhoidectomy) at the Presbyterian Institute for Minimally Invasive Technology (PIMIT). PIMIT is a local program focused on the development of new technologies, basic and clinical research, and education of physicians and other health care providers. As a part of this program, Dr. Burleson performs live teleconferences from the operating room with his surgical partners, narrating and lecturing for the participating audience throughout the live procedure.
Having done more than 1000 laparoscopic colon operations, Dr. Burleson is now performing robotic colon surgery using the da Vinci® robot. "This technology allows us to do the same thing we have always done but with even more precision and less pain to the patient. It opens up the world of natural orifice surgery or NOTES®," says Dr. Burleson. Using the robot, he can perform a colon resection at the time of hysterectomy, avoiding having to make an abdominal incision to remove the specimen (which is removed with the uterus through the vagina).
Dr. Burleson has extensive experience with inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer and polyps. In addition to these areas of expertise, his practice encompasses colonoscopy for cancer screening, new and relatively painless techniques to treat hemorrhoids, diverticulitis and the entire spectrum of colorectal problems.
Dr. Burleson and his wife Jennifer, a registered nurse, have one daughter, Jessica. As a family man, outdoorsman and musician, Dr. Burleson is multi-faceted in his interests. Hunting, fishing, snow and water skiing, team sports, golf and scuba diving balance his musical talents, playing the trumpet, cornet and flugelhorn. A native of Vicenza, Italy, he also speaks Italian.
He is board certified by the American Board of Colon & Rectal Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Burleson also offer robotic assisted surgery with the use of the da Vinci® Surgical System.
