The path to Dr. Chun's diverse and distinguished career started as an undergraduate at Brown University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree. It led him to the New Jersey Medical School, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree with highest honors, was presented with several prestigious awards and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He received his Ophthalmology Residency at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center—where he was selected Chief Resident—before completing his fellowship in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery at the Tufts-New England Eye Center in Boston. In keeping with his commitment to the care of American soldiers and their family members, Dr. Chun returned to Walter Reed where he was Chief of Retina Service and spent six years as a vitreoretinal surgeon, while also serving as an Ophthalmic Consultant to The White House, before joining The Retina Group of Washington.
Dr. Chun is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and licensed to practice in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. He is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine in Bethesda, Md., an active member of the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) and a committee member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Clinical Education Division.
While at Walter Reed, Dr. Chun pioneered the use of the ophthalmic endoscope in the U.S. Military and was honored with the prestigious Rhett Buckler Award for his presentation on Endoscopic Vitrectomy at the 2009 ASRS Retina Congress. He has served as the Primary and Associate Investigator on a variety of clinical research studies, several of which explored the causes of proliferative vitreoretinopathy and the outcomes of combat-related ocular trauma. He also has contributed a number of articles to peer-reviewed publications and compiled an impressive list of professional presentations that document Dr. Chun's contributions to the field of retinal and macular diseases.
