Brief Intro

Clifford Lee Salinger, M.D., received his fellowship training in Cornea and External Diseases at the Pacific Presbyterian Medical Center in San Francisco, California. This is an additional one-year program above and beyond the normal training for ophthalmologists. Following his fellowship, he was in practice for more than three years in Phoenix, Arizona, and one year in Rochester, New York, as a faculty member of a cornea fellowship-training program. While in Phoenix, he served as a consultant at the Indian Health Services Hospital. He has been in practice as a Corneal / External Disease & Refractive Surgery specialist in the West Palm Beach area since 1996. Prior to his Fellowship, Dr. Salinger completed a three-year residency in ophthalmology at the New Jersey Eye Institute in Newark, New Jersey. He earned his Medical Degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and his Bachelor of Arts degree at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Salinger's other experience in the field of Ophthalmology includes training as an International Ophthalmology fellow with ORBIS international, a non-profit organization, which serves developing countries worldwide. The ORBIS airplane, complete with an operating room and closed circuit television, is a converted DC-10, which serves as a flying, teaching eye hospital. He has made several return trips with the ORBIS team for programs on board the airplane and into local hospitals where he helps to train local host country ophthalmologists to perform various eye surgical procedures and to diagnose and treat eye disease. Dr. Salinger is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and the National Board of Medical Examiners. He is currently on the staff of several local hospitals and out patient surgical centers. His affiliations and memberships are numerous and include the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association, the Ocular Microbiology and Immunology Group, the Castroviejo Corneal Society, International Society of Refractive Surgery, and the Pediatric Keratoplasty Association. In addition, Dr. Salinger is an active member of the Palm Beach County Ophthalmological Society and the Florida State Ophthalmological Society. In addition to his extensive educational background and clinical practice, Dr. Salinger lectures frequently to a variety of groups and organizations and attends numerous continuing education seminars. He has organized and continues to oversee an extensive program for the continuing education of ophthalmic medical personnel and office staff seeking formal certification as ophthalmic assistants. He has participated in several research projects which include work with the excimer laser used for refractive surgery as an FDA clinical investigator, in the correction of nearsightedness and the treatment of corneal scars and opacities; with extended wear bandage contact lenses after corneal transplant surgery; the changes in the ocular surface environment with contact lens wear; the visual prognosis in severe intraocular eye infections; and the development of primary and preventative eye care programs in developing countries while working with ORBIS International. Current research includes seeking better treatments for Dry Eye Syndrome and improving the utilization of Corneal Transplant tissue and the success rate of Corneal Transplantation Surgery.
